Powerful corporations are vying to turn Mars into a habitable planet. They are expending vast resources and using new technologies to raise the temperature, create a breathable atmosphere and oceans full of water. As terraforming progresses, more and more people will relocate from Earth to live on the Red Planet.
Create new habitat
In Terraforming Mars, you control a corporation and buy and play cards that describe various projects. These projects often have a direct or indirect influence on the terraforming process, and they can also consist of business projects of different kinds. To win the game, you must achieve a good terraforming score and collect as many victory points as possible. Every time you increase a global parameter (temperature, oxygen content or ocean cover), the terraforming value increases. This determines both your base income in MegaCredits and your base score. As the terraforming process progresses, more and more projects become feasible. Additionally, victory points are awarded for improving human influence in the solar system. This can be anything from founding a city to building infrastructure or protecting the environment.
Time is measured in generations and each generation starts with a start player phase, followed by a research phase in which players get access to new cards. In the action phase, you take 1 or 2 actions in turn until everyone has passed. In the following production phase, all players produce resources according to the production parameters of your player tableaus and receive income from your terraforming values.
The game board has progress bars for temperature, oxygen content, terraforming value and generations. There is a map of the surface of Mars on which ocean, green space and city tiles are placed during the game. Also shown is a listing of all available standard projects, as well as the milestones and awards you are competing for.
The game ends when there is enough oxygen to breathe (14%), enough oceans for Earth-like weather (9) and the temperature is well above freezing (+8 °C). Then it will be possible, if not pleasant, to live on the surface of Mars!
